Our previous study showed that isoflavonerich soy extract prevented lung carcinogenesis induced by benzo(a)pyrene (BP) and also regulated cellular quinone reductase (QR), an anticarcinogenic marker enzyme. This study has been performed to investigate whether soy isoflavones are related to the regulation of QR in an organspecific manner in vivo as their possible anticarcinogenic mechanism. ICR mice were assigned to four different groups fed diets containing 0, 0.1, and 0.2% isoflavones, and 0.1% hydrolyzed isoflavones. QR activity in lung was greater in mice fed hydrolyzed isoflavones, compared to mice fed diets containing casein, 0.1 and 0.2% isoflavones. Isoflavones-containing diet suppressed arylhydrocarbon hydroxylase activity in liver and QR activities in liver, kidney, and forestomach. Isoflavone intake might contribute to the prevention of the early stage chemical tumorigenesis by modulating detoxifying enzymes in an organ-specific manner.
